Welcome to my website, my home on the internet. My name is Granville White. I am a licensed amateur radio operator in the United Kingdom (Wales) and my station is MW7FRN, although since the amateur radio license changes which came about in year 2024, we no longer are required to use the country specifier "W", so I can use M7FRN anywhere in the UK.
At this time I am not in Wales. I am currently living in China. As there is no reciprocal licensing with China at this time, until I return to Wales or the United Kingdom, I don't do any RF, which is a shame as it is really missed. I am originally from Hengoed in the Rhymney Valley, South Wales - Now living in Beihai City, Guangxi, China.
Why am I in China? Well, I am married to a Chinese national who didn't want to live in God's Great Country Wales — too cold, too wet, and I had to drag her out of the house when it snowed! So for now I am living in China. For how long? Who knows, nothing's set in stone. I actually love it here. Where we live is very beautiful, close to the sea, 24 kilometers of beach, very hot. The only downside is the mosquitoes who love the taste of Welsh blood.
Been retired now for 4 years. Left it late in life to get my amateur radio license, but the opportunity came about during the COVID-19 lockdown. Bored with nothing to do, laid off on furlough from work, so I had the time and was in the right frame of mind to study and take the Foundation exam, which was taken online with no problems.
As for hobbies, well, mostly computing now. I don't have any radio equipment. I do now and again use Echolink and you will find me regularly on my Zello channel (ZELLO/FRN). Once in a blue moon, I will stay up late and use Echolink to access the Wales Digital Radio Group (WDRG). I don't go on very often because the Net on a Saturday is like 4 am in the morning here.
I spend a lot of time these days writing and updating my website, which helps to keep my mind active. I have a few friends in the UK who keep in touch via Facebook, Zello, and Messenger. I still sometimes use FRN, but it's gone very quiet lately. I don't run an FRN server anymore; it's just impossible from my location. Ulus, my friend in Cyprus (Panther 07), I hear from most days via Zello or Messenger, and I also hear from Matt from Kent (M7MOK) now and again, which is much appreciated. I have family in Wales who I hear from a couple of times a week, so I am not completely cut off from the UK.
I still have an interest in everything ham radio related, and so I keep this website up and running. As I said, it keeps my mind active. I now have the time to review all my code and make improvements to speed things up and experiment with different coding methods.
